What is IVF?
IVF has now become a very popular medical term, with more number of people now aware of this technique since it is more accessible to them and offered in more number of hospitals unlike a few years ago. This happens to be a very old concept which was introduced more than 30 years ago and is meant for the treatment of women with a damaged Fallopian tube. The process has also been nicknamed the test-tube’ baby technique.
How does IVF Work?
- To start with the IVF Treatment means stimulating the development of the follicles in the ovary with the help of a hormone therapy.
- Later these are collected for the eggs that are required for the IVF treatment. and carefully fertilized in a test tube.
- Once the fertilization process is successful it will result into the creation of several embryos.
- The embryo is placed inside an incubator and kept there for 2 to 5 days.
- ! or 2 embryos are selected and transferred into the vagina and into the uterus.
- Once the implantation occurs the pregnancy of the women begins.
- Since this process is not always successful the first time the additional embryos are frozen, making it easier to replicated the transfer process if necessary.
Side Effects of IVF
Although the IVF process is usually quite safe there are often some side effects that can occur:
- Multiple Pregnancy is a very possible outcome of the IVF treatment. The reason why this may happen is that more than one embryos are transferred into the women to increase the chances of success. However, when both the embryos are successful, results in multiple pregnancy.
- Hormone drugs can generate a reaction in the women. However, this is a very rare possibility and the risk is as low as 1-2% that the women over react to the hormone drugs.
- The process of egg collection can get a bit tedious at times and hence it is often required to administer the patent with local anesthetic.
- The process is not painful in anyway however patient does undergo a high level of physical and emotional stress.
